We are excited to have four new projects to support in 2022 that will allow us to continue making a vital difference in the cloud forest and headwaters regions of the Peruvian Amazon. In this newsletter, I will go into more detail about one of our cloud forest projects.
BOSQUE GUARDIÁN: Wildlife Corridor and Sustainable Living
ARC is partnering with Bosque Guardián (BG), a Peruvian non-profit organization, to both create a conservation/wildlife corridor and promote sustainable living in the valley between the two mountain ranges of the Cordillera Escalera Regional Park.
This valley is home to approximately 170 families, the majority of whom are currently earning their living as cattle ranchers. As well as acquiring land for direct conservation, we will work with the local families to reforest areas that have been cleared for cattle grazing, and to expand the alternative livelihood projects initiated by BG (ecotourism, agroforestry, artisanal paper making, and beekeeping for honey production).
A main focus with this project is to protect the region’s jaguars which are under threat from habitat loss and conflicts with humans. There are an estimated 15,000 jaguars left in the world and their last refuge is in the Amazon basin. We find videos tell stories much better so please enjoy this short clip we made about our plans to create a jaguar corridor.
Thanks to you, our generous supporters, we have funds available to begin this project and we are in the process of identifying which parcels of land are the most strategic for us to acquire. However, as one million hectares are needed to ensure the protection of 50 jaguars, we will be fundraising for this project over the long term. If this project resonates with you, please consider making a donation here!
Thank you for continuing to stand with us to protect and defend the Amazon rainforest as one of the most meaningful investments we can make for future generations.
As always, I am available to answer any questions you may have.
Warmest regards,
Jana & The ARC Team.
