Protection
Protection
On our 773 hectares of land, we are the proud protectors of many endangered species, including jaguars, tapirs and harpy eagles. We protect over 100 brazil nut trees, the giants of the rainforest. Not only do these giants store huge amounts of carbon, but the nuts from these trees provide a sustainable income for local communities.
Reforestation
Reforestation
Our forest rangers collect the healthiest seeds and seedlings from the native hardwood trees and bring them to our nursery. Once they have matured into saplings they are strategically planted back on our lands.
Restoration
Restoration
One example of the damage left behind by illegal gold miners is mercury polluted pits. We are investigating the best scientific methods to clean them up. As a start, we are planting a bamboo species that accumulates mercury in its tissues and thereby removing it from the soil.
Pollination Promotion
Pollination Promotion
Bees are among the most important pollinators and their survival is key to world food security. Due to pesticides and deforestation, the indigenous meliponine bee population is threatened. To promote their populations, our rangers locate wild bee nests and transfer part of the community to houses that mimic their natural nests. An increased population of meliponines will help repair deforested areas.
Macaw Reproduction
Macaw Reproduction
Macaws have suffered major population declines due to the logging of the old growth hardwood trees on which they rely for nesting sites. To help with their reproduction, we are mounting macaw nesting boxes on the large trees on our brazil nut concession. We hope this will lead to a new generation of baby macaws being born and raised on – and above – our land.
Education
Education
Our EARTH project stands for Environment Activities & Rainforest Teaching Hub. It is ARC’s online learning platform to teach students of all ages about the rainforest through stories, videos and activities. We hope to inspire an appreciation of our natural world and encourage the passion needed to save it. Visit EARTH here.
