During the pandemic’s lockdowns, illegal gold miners invaded our Brazil nut concession when our forest guardians were forced to evacuate. In fact, at one point there were 13 illegal mining camps operating on our land.

We spent most of 2023 peacefully convincing those miners to leave – and leave, they did. This was a huge victory! However, the destruction they left behind was heartbreaking. What was once a thriving forest was left scarred and many of the animals had fled.

Fast-forward to 2025 and now we have a more incredible reason to celebrate. Our drone camera recently captured something extraordinary: a family of giant river otters has returned to our concession.

Giant river otters are endangered. Spotting even one is rare. To have an entire family living safely under our protection is a sign of resilience – and a symbol of hope. Their return tells us that nature is healing. Our hard work to defend and restore these lands is truly making a difference.

This discovery reminds us why we fight so hard to protect the Amazon. Every species that returns strengthens the forest’s future – and ours.
